OBS nested scenes can help simplify your use of sources.

The Problem #

Let’s say you have a source you would like to use on multiple scenes, like a camera or capture, but you don’t want to manage the source in each of those scenes. Nested scenes can help with that!

As an example, I have a camera source in a nested scene and I can apply filters to that single source instead of multiple sources in difference scenes.

The How #

  • You first create a scene with the object you would like to nest. I like to use the nomenclature [NS] in front of a nested scene.

Here is an example of my nested scenes:

Within the nested scene I have the source(s) scaled to fit the frame as I can scale the nested scene once referenced.

  • Once a nested scene has been created, you may add it to any scene and scale or move it how you see fit. (Select add scene when adding a source).

The Why #

Now why do all of this?

It’s a lot easier to get creative and apply filters or scale things to cater to specific scenes or moments. Maybe you want to quickly adjust your camera placement in a scene, but don’t want to affect where it may be placed in another scene.

I like to use a stream deck for quick actions. I like to have the source visibility as a multi-action button in case I need to quickly turn a source on or off, and it’s a breeze because I just need to reference one source in the nested scene.
